Student questions if someone vandalized car over 'dibs'

CHICAGO (WLS) -- After a car was vandalized while parked in Logan Square, the owner is wondering if it's a case of dibs going way too far.

"It was just destroyed, completely. I thought it was an explosion, truthfully, it was that loud," said Ashley Mater, car owner. "A stick of dynamite or something?"

Ashley Mater was leaving for work before sunrise Tuesday when she saw her damaged car and thought, "Someone seriously blew up my car over a dibs spot that was not even really shoveled that much, and after all, the snow is already melting."

It happened overnight in Logan Square on the 2500-block of N. Hamlin. With nothing stolen and no problems with anyone in the area, it left Mater questioning the motive, especially after the blizzard nearly two weeks ago.

"It hasn't snowed in like a week or so. If that's over dibs, then it's gone too far," Mater said.

"If it is, it's just ridiculous someone took it to that level," said Meghan Mater, victim's sister.

Coincidentally, city crews will start collecting dibs items on Friday. Mater immediately filed a police report.

Now, Ashley Mater is reluctant to park on the block. She's just hoping for better days ahead.

"I'm a college student, I'm always broke. This is not a good week for me," Ashley Mater said.
