CHICAGO (WLS) -- Beginning today, Monday, Dec. 21, there are new rules for drone owners in the United States.

All drones must now be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing police to track people who violate rules including flying drones higher than 400 feet or within five miles of an airport.

Registration costs $5. The fee is waived through Jan. 21, 2016.
