Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine in "The Edge of Seventeen."

"The Edge of Seventeen" movie opens Friday and is being promoted as the "Breakfast Club" for a younger generation.

Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a high school outsider who finds out that her best friend takes up with her popular brother. The character's social life is a catastrophe, but has a sarcastic, but empathetic teacher as a sounding board.

Steinfeld said she could relate to her character.

"In fact, I was in school up until 6th grade and then I started home schooling. And maybe I didn't experience the sort of quintessential high school proms and homecomings and parties, but I as a teenager have gone through everything she's gone through," Steinfeld said.

The movie is honest, sad, awkward, weird, confusing and very funny, Steinfeld said.

"I think it's in the over dramatic teenage reaction to half of what happens in life," she said.

Next month, Steinfeld performs in Rosemont with the Backstreet Boys as part of the Jingle Balls Tour.

"I'm so excited to be performing and have a song that's climbing the charts it's absolutely insane, collaborating with writers and producers," she said.
