ELGIN, Ill. (WLS) -- There's a 30 million word gap between advantaged 3-year-olds and those who come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Because of this, educators are especially concerned about making sure at-risk kids are ready for kindergarten.

Officials in the state's second-largest district, Elgin Area School District U-46, say 60 percent of its children are not ready for kindergarten.

Staff writer Madhu Krishnamurthy looks at programs in Elgin, Barrington and Wheaton schools trying to combat that problem.
