4 taken to hospitals after I-290 shooting, crash

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Illinois State Police said a 20-year-old man was injured after being shot on the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway Tuesday afternoon, temporarily shutting down all inbound lanes.

He was originaly listed in serious to critical condition, but was upgraded to stable by Wednesday.

The single-car crash occurred around 3 p.m. at Morgan, and traffic was diverted off the expressway at Racine. All lanes were reopened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"I'm frustrated. I've been on the expressway for two hours and I still have another hour to go to get home," said Andrea Wheeler, driver.

The driver of the car was shot in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital.

Illinois State Police shut down the expressway looking for evidence.

"It's, ugh, hectic. It's hectic. I'm ready to just be home now. I don't even know how long I've been out here. I've been out here since three o'clock," said driver Clela Gooch.

Three other passengers in the SUV were also taken to hospitals. A 24-year-old man in the front passenger seat was taken to Stroger Hospital with a broken leg, and a woman and infant were taken to Rush University Medical Center as a precaution, but they were not injured.

The shooting is at least the 45th area expressway shooting in 2016, an average of one per week. There were 39 expressway shootings in all of 2015, more than double than in 2014.
