May-K My Day: Student's tuition paid off
May-K My Day: Student's tuition paid off

Levy Hamer and his brother Matthew have not had an easy life. They lived with their mother until illness and homelessness tore them apart. Devin Jones met the brothers at Holy Angels. He began mentoring them, and Devin's mom Esther agreed to take the boys in - it was the first real home they'd had in a long time.

Devin got Levy transferred from De la Salle High School to St. Laurence High School (his Alma Mater) where both boys thrived. Devin joined the Navy, and Esther still cares for the boys. Levy has found his talent on the football field, and already has a scholarship for college. They do everything out of the kindness of their hearts and with the help of family and friends, but they have gotten behind in tuition payments to both De La Salle and St. Laurence. Without tuition paid in full - Levy will not get his transcripts and not be able to go to college.

Levy is scheduled to graduate on Tuesday. We told his story to friends at the Guaranteed Rate Foundation - and they offered to help! They are paying off both debts - so Levy can go to college and they have some White Sox gifts as well. They also brought a gift for Esther - because she really is the star of this story.

Guaranteed Rate Foundation is having their annual fundraiser:
