Halloween trick-or-treating postponed in several Chicago-area suburbs

Instead of ghosts and goblins giving everyone a fright on Halloween, scares this year are linked to the weather.

The cold and snowy forecast has prompted some towns in the area to move trick-or-treating. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several Chicago-area counties.

In north suburban Vernon Hills, officials said forecasters predict up to 3 inches of snow. Village officials are concerned about children's safety, especially when crossing the street in potentially hazardous traffic conditions. As a result, they have rescheduled their authorized trick-or-treating hours to Saturday.

"People understand that while there's a little bit of an inconvenience, it's being done for the safety of everyone involved," said Vernon Hills Police Commander Jim Levicki.

Residents who have heard about the change don't seem to mind.

Elizabeth Cucci said her son is just looking forward to dressing up as Buzz Lightyear.

"I guess it depends on how bad the weather is going to be. It might make sense. If it's really bad, we probably won't be out for very long anyway," Cucci said.

For those who don't want to wait until the weekend, there are still plenty of indoor options this Halloween. Many malls in the area, including Northbrook Court, have trick-or-treating at participating stores.

"We have about 50 retailers that are going to be offering candy if children come into their stores to trick or treat," said Brian Lee, Northbrook Court's general manager.
