Little Black Pearl/Jordan Brand WINGS Design Program

Little Black Pearl/Jordan Brand WINGS Design Program

One is an unmistakable brand on athletic fields and courts, bearing the name of a true sports legend, the other is a hub for the arts with a rich history in Chicago and the two have recently come together to offer up amazing opportunities for aspiring young artists. For more than 20 years, Little Black Pearl has taught Chicago youth the basics of art and marketing that art. So, LBP Founder Monica Haslip knew Nike's Jordan Brand was such a logical partner to help her most talented students learn more about designing and marketing some of today's hottest apparel and footwear. Jordan Brands' solution was launching the WINGS Design Program. Two classes of 30 students took part in design sessions with Jordan designers at the State Street flagship Jordan Brand store. At the conclusion of the 10-week session, each member of the team of young artists with the winning T-shirt design wins a $10K college scholarship, courtesy of Jordan Brands. Also when the most recent 10-week session wrapped, Jordan Brands flew all 30 students out to visit the corporate headquarters in Portland, OR.

Christopher Augmon- Jewelry Designer

Christopher Augmon, jewelry designer

Long before jewelry designer Christopher Augmon touched a piece of jewelry, he worked as a fashion model. His eye for fashion expanded when he started making jewelry several years ago. To date, his collection of earrings, bracelets, cuff links and even engagement rings has caught the eyes of actress Zoe Saldana and former Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose. For the past twenty five years, Christopher has volunteered with the Chicago Youth Programs helping troubled youth. As a result, he started the line "18K" to inspire young people who may be faced with challenges.

Crane High School Debate Team

Crane High School Debate Team

At Crane High School on the city's West Side, students are learning how to argue their case as participants of the school's debate team. In existence for a little over three years, this program has become very popular as the teenagers have gotten a chance to improve their oratory skills. Just last year, a few students were privileged to attend a summer program on the campus of Dartmouth University that allowed them to hone their debate skills. This opportunity allowed these young people to look at their lives through a different lens and as a result some of the students have decided to change careers with one young lady looking to become an attorney.

Smile for Nikki

Smile for Nikki

When northwest Indiana mother Vicki Walker lost her only daughter in an accidental drowning, Walker donated her daughter's heart, saving the life of a close family friend. Now, as she continues to work through the heartbreaking loss, Walker has teamed up to leave another legacy for her daughter Domonique "Nikki" Smith. Nikki sang, danced and performed since the time she was 2 years old. To pay tribute to Nikki and her love of the arts, Walker helped to launch a children's performing arts program. Chicago Heights Park District heard about the concept of "Smile for Nikki" and they now offer the classes two evenings a week this summer. The 6 to 13 year olds enrolled in "Smile for Nikki" learn how to act, dance and sing from working professionals. The program culminates with a final performance, called The Jungal Book. Eventually, Vicki and her "Smile for Nikki" co-founders hope to open their own Performing Arts School.
