Get creative with picnics to save calories this summer
You don't have to deprive yourself at summer picnics, just make sure you bring healthy food for you and others to choose from.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- You don't have to deprive yourself at summer picnics, just make sure you bring healthy food for you and others to choose from. Nutritionist Vicki Shanta Retelny stopped by ABC 7 to share tips on how to have a healthier picnic.

Take the typical picnic fare and swap it with a healthier option. For example, instead of mayo-laden potato salad, make slaw in a light vinaigrette. Instead of heavy grilled meats, make grilled portobello mushrooms. Instead of sugar-filled ice cream, make fruit kabobs or cups. Swap out sugary sodas and cocktails for fruit-infused sparkling water drinks.

A little creativity will go a long way in saving you needless calories and nutritionally elevating your picnics.
