Taste of Chicago breaks turnout records

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Taste of Chicago broke turnout records this weekend with about 1.6 million people attending the Grant Park food festival.

The sun was out and organizers said sales were up Sunday, thanks to the picturesque weather that provided a perfect backdrop for thousands of festival goers to enjoy some of Chicago's best eats.

"The sun is shining on Chicago this week," said Courtney Botica. "It's a little bit hot but I got my napkins to dab off a little bit."

This year, Taste of Chicago featured 66 different vendors. There were several new additions, as well as old favorites.

"It wouldn't be Taste without Eli's Cheesecake," said David Peters.

In addition to catering to people's taste buds, Taste of Chicago featured music performances and new activities like children's games and free dance lessons.

"It brings a good crowd, it brings a lot of people to Chicago," said Botica. "You brave the crowds so you can get the good food that you don't get to eat all throughout the year."

"I like the people watching," said Peters. "There's no other place for people watching better than Taste."

The Billy Goat Tavern served 13,000 "cheeseborgers," Gold Coast Dogs served 90,000 hot dogs. Lou Malnati's dished out 20,000 slices of pizza and the Churro Factory says it sold three tons worth of funnel cakes.
