Good Samaritans honored for help in Arlington Heights chainsaw attack

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- Four Good Samaritans were honored Monday night in connection with a chainsaw attack in Arlington Heights from June.

The attack seriously injured one man in the parking lot of an office park in the 500-block of Golf Road on June 19.

Frantic calls for help poured into 911 that afternoon.

"I was in my office, heard the commotion, ran out to see what was going on," said Scott Frost.

Frost's colleague Mark Hewitt followed him.

"I told the guy with the chainsaw, 'Chill, relax.' He revved the chainsaw up, ran past me, I let him go," Hewitt said.

"I really couldn't do much because a guy with a chainsaw is kind of dangerous," Frost said.

Police said Jose Jamies-Jimenez sliced into his estranged wife's coworker with a chainsaw until it jammed. That's when Hewitt and Frost jumped to his aid.

"I think if we wouldn't have got him inside when we did, and I know how to put a tourniquet on somebody and do first aid, he might not have lived, because he was bleeding pretty bad," Frost said.

"Some people, by their very nature, don't think. They just move, they act," said Chief Gerald Mourning, Arlington Heights Police Department.

Police awarded the impulsive actions of four colleagues that day.

"Our first officer on the scene was busy, attempting to make an arrest of the person responsible," Mourning said.

Jaimes-Jiminez, 27, of Arlington Heights was charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department.
