CHICAGO (WLS) -- The American Red Cross hoped a visit to the zoo will help inspire people to give blood during what's considered a crucial time of year.
The Brookfield Zoo hosted an all-day blood drive in their Discovery Center. Blood and platelet donations often decline in the summer but the need for blood does not. According to the Red Cross, someone in the U.S. is in need of blood every two seconds.
The Red Cross has issued an emergency request for blood donations.
