CHICAGO (WLS) -- Veterinarians are warning dog owners about a bacteria that could get them sick.

Experts said there's a leptospirosis outbreak among dogs. Animals pick up the bacteria from the urine of wildlife. Some signs of infection are decreased appetite and vomiting. It could lead to stomach problems, liver failure and even death.

There is a vaccine but it isn't foolproof because there are many strains.

Experts said humans should avoid contact with the body fluids and tissues of infect pets, and wash their hands frequently.
