CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago area blood center is making a "critical appeal" for blood donations ahead of the holiday weekend.
Heartland Blood Centers said Thursday it has less than a day's worth left of O-negative blood on hand. They're also short on O-positive and Rh-negative blood types.
The center is especially concerned going into the long Memorial Day weekend, when car accidents increase.
Heartland Blood Centers serves more than 71 hospitals - including 5 trauma centers - in Chicago, northwest Indiana and northern Illinois.
