A man was found dead in a Chicgao police lockup early Monday, police said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was found dead in the lockup area of a Chicago police station Monday morning in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Police said the man was found unresponsive at about 12:15 a.m. in the 3rd District Police Station lockup in the 7400-block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. As the day went on, the department's spokesman said it appears the man may have had cardiac arrest.

Family members said Shawn Brider, 48, was arrested Sunday night after falling asleep in a parked car with a child inside. At about 4:30 a.m., they were told Brider had died in custody at the 3rd District.

"All I know is he was sitting in his car. The police pulled up because he had his 2-year-old in the car and said he was endangering his child because he fell asleep," Kewonda Brider said.

His relatives said Brider, his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter live outside of Chicago and had been visiting relatives over the weekend. His family questions why Brider was taken into custody in the first place.

"He was just waiting for his girlfriend to come downstairs and he nodded off because he had been driving. They arrested him for that," Kewonda Brider said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has done an autopsy, but the results are pending more test results. Police are conducting a death investigation.
