CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 17-year-old girl was shot in the chest Wednesday afternoon in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood. It appears she was an innocent bystander.

Witnesses said a gang fight involving as many of five people over contested turf on the 1300-block of W. 111th led to shots being fired. A 17-year-old girl, who was not part of the altercation, was caught in the crossfire.

After she was shot, the victim ran a block away. She was rushed to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where she is hospitalized in serious condition.

"Our staff is out here trying to get in front of it so there won't be retaliation," said Bob Jackson, of Roseland Ceasefire.

Witnesses say an adult, possibly a security guard from the nearby charter school may have been the shooter. That's what community activist Andrew Holmes heard as well. He said police obtained video from security cameras on the corner church which is attached to the charter school.

"They're innocent and that's going on every day. You know, people walking the streets - you see someone with a different color on, you figure they're with a rival gang," Holmes said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
