Parents voice concerns after Morgan Park-Simeon basketball game postponed

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Morgan Park High School parents met Saturday with the school's principal for the second time to voice their frustration about inadequate gymnasium at the school.

"Everyone got their concerns heard and we all agreed that we're going to work toward something common for the children and the betterment of Morgan Park High School," said parent Tiffany Burrell.

The meeting comes after parents threatened to boycott a Saturday game between the top-ranked Morgan Park boy's basketball team and their rival Simeon High School. The game was moved to a different high school because the school's gymnasium is small to host the expected crowd.

On Friday, the Chicago Public Schools postponed the game. A new date for the game has not been determined, CPS officials said, however the game must be played before the end of the month.

"As parents, we're interested in putting our investment into the school and our students," said parent Maurice Bins.

Parents want CPS and city officials to commit to building a new gymnasium for the 1,400-student school.

They also said the school is in desperate need of other improvements.

"We've had these issues for years," said Latasha McGee, a parent. "And we have the support and the administration behind us so it's the time to do it now."

Darlene Randall, whose son Jarrin Randall plays for the basketball team, said the team should be able to host games at home and get true home-court advantage.

"I just hope in the future that they get a bigger gym that fits a lot of people and everybody can come to the game," he said.
