$250K bond for man charged in fatal Avondale crash

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago man appeared in court Tuesday on charges of reckless homicide in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash on the city's Northwest Side.

The judge ordered 33-year-old Jason Missak held on a $250,000 bond, which means he has to post $25,000 to be released.

The family of Maria del Carmen Venegas, the woman killed in the crash, is questioning the fairness of the bond that was imposed. Her family left the courthouse heartbroken and shocked on Tuesday.

"I can't believe that because he killed one person: my mom," said Daniel Valdez, the victim's son.

Relatives said Venegas, who was killed in that accident, was on her way to church, along with her husband, Andres Garcia. He remains hospitalized.

"He's got some pain in his body, but is ok now," Valdez said.

Prosecutors said Missak was arrested at home late Sunday afternoon after police traced his vehicle. The white Jaguar was abandoned at the intersection of Belmont and Kedzie following the crash, which investigators said Missak caused after running a red light.

Cell phone video of the scene showed Missak trying to hail a cab in order to get away. In court, prosecutors said the cab driver refused to take him. Missak is said to have then jumped a barrier and run away.

Witnesses to the crash told investigators Missak appeared to have been drunk, but no DUI charges have been filed against him.
