1 dead, 2 wounded after gunman fires shots into van in Gresham

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 50-year-old father was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Someone approached a Chrysler minivan at a stop sign in the 8000-block of South Marshfield Avenue around 1:55 a.m., fired shots into the vehicle and ran away, police said.

"I heard about somewhere between 8-9 shots," a neighbor said. He wanted to remain anonymous.

The 50-year-old man was shot in the back and forearm. He was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's identity has not been released.

His family walked quickly into the hospital Thursday morning. About an hour later, they returned to the parking lot in tears.

A 33-year-old man was shot in the right forearm and a 59-year-old woman was shot in the hip and back. They were both transported to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions stabilized.

No one is in custody. Area South detectives are investigating. Police said both male victims are documented gang members.

A woman who lives near the crime scene said she fears she won't make it to her next birthday. The man who heard the shots lamented that constant gunfire is just a fact of life.

"Most common. Hearing gunshots is like hearing sirens around here," he said.

In a Facebook post, Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church said he plans to hold a peace walk Friday near the scene. He said Chicago is "full of blood" and called for action.
