NORTHBROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- With parties planned across the country tonight, Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging people to ring in the new year with safety on their minds.

They held an event in northwest suburban Northbrook promoting their "Tie One on for Safety" campaign, which encourages people to make smart choices and have a designated driver.

They say there was nearly 1,000 drunk driving deaths in the U.S. between Thanksgiving and New Years in 2014.
