CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city says minorities make up more than 70 percent of those who have recently applied to join the Chicago Police Department.

According to a spokesperson for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, this reflects a growing trend compared to previous years. In 2013, 58 percent were minority applicants and in 2010, 53 percent of applicants identified as minorities.

The city says the numbers reflect CPD's goal to increase diversity among its ranks and build a police department that represents the makeup of the city.

CPD is accepting applications until January 31. Candidates can visit chicagopolice.org to apply.
