Uber has agreed to pay out more than $28 million to settle a lawsuit over its driver background checks.

The class action suit challenged Uber's claims that its checks are "industry leading". That money will go out to roughly 25 million riders if the settlement is approved by the court and accepted by riders.

Passengers who used Uber in the U.S. between Jan. 1, 2013, and Jan. 31, 2016, will be notified by email and have the option to accept a refund as a credit on their Uber account or a charge back to their credit card on file.
