Ex-state Rep. Derrick Smith scheduled to be released from jail

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Former Illinois state Rep. Derrick Smith will soon be a free man.

Smith, a Democrat from Chicago, was scheduled for release on Friday, after serving a five-month sentence at a Minnesota prison.

A federal jury convicted him of taking $7,000 bribe in exchange for his support of a day care center's application for a $50,000 state grant.

The fictitious facility was part of an FBI sting.
