CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 13-year-old boy was shot and injured in Chicago's Austin neighborhood Friday night, Chicago police said.

The shooting occurred in the 5500-block of West Jackson just before 8:30 p.m. The boy was shot in the lower back, police said, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Jackson at Lotus is blocked off while Chicago police investigate. Neighbors say they heard shots and then saw dozens of kids running away from the scene.

"It was, uh, shooting in the crowd. It was a fight amongst some girls," said neighbor Merdis Love.

"Why? You know, it's a nice community, there's a lot of older people over here, we don't usually have this type of violence over here, especially with the young ones," said Lisa Nixon, neighbor.

Investigators have not said what led to the shooting or if they're searching for any particular suspect.
