Construction crew strikes gas main in South Elgin along Route 31

SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (WLS) -- Route 31 is shut down in west suburban South Elgin after a construction crew struck a 4 inch gas main along the road Monday morning.

Ten nearby homes were evacuated. The South Elgin Fire Department said residents should be able to get back into their houses soon. No one was hurt.

Nicor is on the scene. Route 31 is expected to be closed between West Spring Street and Concord Avenue until around 3:15 p.m.
