CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Police Department is offering more overtime opportunities, a new strategy aimed at keeping more officers on the streets.

Officers can earn extra pay on their days off while patrolling their assigned beats.

The goal is to have officers working the neighborhoods they know best.

CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson said there is an unacceptable amount of violence in Chicago.

"The only way we're going to help reduce this crime is for people to report things when they see it. But again, I'm committed, CPD is committed to restoring the trust that the community has in the police department," Johnson said.

And as a way to help build that trust, today officers attended Saturday a team-building workshop called "policing at the speed of trust" to learn new policing tools.
