Boil order issued in Minooka after E. coli found in water supply

MINOOKA, Ill. (WLS) -- A boil order has been issued in Minooka after E. coli and other bacteria were found in the water supply.

Minooka Public Works said E. coli and total coliform bacteria were found in a water sample Friday. These bacteria can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and other symptoms. They may pose a greater health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.

Residents should boil all water for at least one minute before using, officials said. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

Officials are working to determine the source of the contamination, which they believe is the water fixture at the sampling point.

Officials are re-sampling the water and will inform the public when bacteria is no longer present. Sample results are expected to be analyzed by late Sunday afternoon.
