CHICAGO (WLS) -- A driver involved in a fatal wrong-way crash on the Chicago Skyway on Saturday has been charged with misdemeanor DUI, Chicago police said Tuesday.

Police said Charlie Gates, 70, was driving the wrong-way in a Jeep Patriot in the inbound lanes of the Skyway near 92nd Street when he collided head-on with a Dodge Caravan at about 9:40 p.m.

The 55-year-old driver of the Dodge Caravan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Authorities have not released his identity.

Gates, of the 3500-block of South Lake Park Avenue, was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition, police said. He has been charged with one count of misdemeanor DUI and cited for driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Chicago police Major Accident Investigation Unit.
