WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WLS) -- The Salvation Army has received its first donated gold coin of the holiday season in a red kettle in suburban Waukegan.

Three other gold coins have also shown up in kettles in Grayslake and in Libertyville, where someone dropped a gold wedding band into a Salvation Army kettle outside a Jewel store.

The Salvation Army said the tradition of dropping special coins, rings and other significant items began locally when the first gold coin was deposited in Lake County more than 25 years ago.
