HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. -- Two teenage boys are in police custody after a 14-year-old boy was shot Thursday evening in north suburban Highland Park.

Shots were fired from a passing car after an "altercation" about 5:35 p.m. near Waukegan Avenue and Orchard Lane, according to a statement from Highland Park police. The Highland Park High School student was injured in the shooting, and was treated and released from a hospital later that evening.

Two boys, ages 16 and 17, have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, and charges were pending to refer them to juvenile court, police said. Detectives are still trying to identify a suspect who may have been the shooter.

Investigators believe the incident was isolated to the people involved and there is "no further threat to public safety," police said. Anyone with information should call the Highland Park Police Department at (847) 432-7730.
