5 hurt, including 2 kids, after West Side chase ends in crash

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Five people were injured, including two children, after a police chase ended in a crash on Chicago's West Side.

Police said officers saw someone fire a shot from inside a silver van in the 3200-block of West Carroll Avenue in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

The officers pursued the van. A source said the chase lasted more than seven miles.

Police said the van failed to stop at a red light at West 59th Street and South Western Avenue in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood. It crashed into two cars in the intersection. A family of four was inside one of the cars.

"It looked like a real bad accident. Like I said, they came right past our house. We were sitting on the front porch. Probably doing like 110, 120. Two seconds later a cop car came right behind them. They had the side door open. We saw like four guys and heard they smashed it up down here, so we came and gave it a look," said Josh Ortega, a witness. "It's just crazy. But I mean, it's nothing new, honestly. You see it every day, pretty much."

Four people were taken into custody, police said.

The driver of the van was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Four others, including two children, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. No officers were injured.

Police received a 911 call about a person shot in the 3200-block of West Carroll, but no one was found at the scene.
