Crash near DeKalb causes major delays on I-88, 1 driver airlifted with serious injuries

DEKALB, Ill. (WLS) -- An accident in the westbound lanes on I-88 near DeKalb seriously injured a driver and caused major traffic headaches Tuesday evening.

Illinois State Police say the accident happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday when a semi-trailer struck two passenger vehicles, sending one of the vehicles and the semi into a ditch.

The driver of the car that wound up in the ditch was airlifted to a local hospital in serious condition.

Westbound I-88 just west of Somonauk Road is down to one lane. Both eastbound lanes are open.
