GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- Indiana's State Board of Education is moving forward on a controversial plan to shut down a Gary middle school.

The board voted 6-4 Thursday to close Dunbar-Pulaski Middle School. The school is the only one in Gary to serve exclusively 7th and 8th graders.

The building has received failing grades six years straight, and the board says it would cost too much to keep the school open. In August 2014, it was given a second chance to remain open after facing closure.

Dunbar-Pulaski is expected to close at the end of the year.
