CHICAGO (WLS) -- A group of men caught an accused thief in the act and helped police arrest him in Chicago's West Loop.

The men were in a bar in the 200-block of South Clinton Avenue when they said they saw a man breaking into cars. They chased him down and called police.

"We all came out and chased him down. My guy tackled him. He called for his friend, who tried to run us over with a car. We luckily pulled his friend out of the way because he would have hit his own guy in the street. Called the cops. Luckily no one got hurt," Adam Smith said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He and an accomplice are in police custody Monday morning.

One of the eyewitnesses who tackled the man is going to school to become a police officer.
