EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- The Evanston Police Department is telling residents: "Call if you can; text if you can't."

Residents can now contact 911 via text message. Police say there are many emergencies where it's impossible to make a phone call, such as when speaking might put the caller in further danger.
