CHICAGO (WLS) -- Dog owners are urged to remain on high alert to keep their pets from being exposed to the dog flu.

More than 1,700 cases of canine influenza have been reported in Cook County. Animal control officials said the outbreak isn't waning.

Symptoms of dog flu are a hacking cough, lethargic behavior, poor appetite, nasal discharge, trouble breathing and fever.

Dog owners are urged to avoid kennels, dog parks and groomers for now.
