OSCEOLA, Ind. (WLS) -- A 3-year-old boy is dead after falling into a river during a family outing in Indiana.

Bryson Washington and his family were out on a pontoon boat on Baugo Bay in the St. Joseph River in Osceola on Sunday. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the Bryson was wearing a life jacket while swimming with his family.

But when the toddler got back onto the boat, officials said he took it off. Bryson fell into the water shortly afterward. A rescue crew was called and divers searched for him for nearly an hour.

Bryson was alive when they found him. But he died at the hospital Sunday evening.

DNR conservation officers are investigating his death. They urge everyone to wear life jackets while on the river, whether they are in or out of the water.
