MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WLS) -- A Michigan City, Ind., boy is expected to be OK after he was struck by a pickup truck driven by his father.

The 3-year-old apparently tried to jump on the back of the foot rail of the truck as the father pulled away and got caught underneath, according to Michigan City police. The boy's father did not know the child had been struck, but received a call from the child's mother.

He returned to the home and took the boy to St. Anthony's Hospital, where he was transferred to Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis due to "severe" injuries to his pelvic area.

Authorities said the boy is expected to be released from the hospital soon, but will have follow-up treatments.

The father is cooperating in the investigation, which is ongoing, police said.
