Bicyclist fatally struck by Metra train in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Ill. (WLS) -- A bicyclist was struck and killed by a Metra BNSF train in west suburban Riverside.

Police said an express train from Chicago to Berwyn hit a man on his bike at the Harlem Avenue crossing around 6:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told police that the gates were down and lights were flashing when he tried to cross the tracks.

The victim has not been identified. Authorities are notifying his family.

Metra halted train traffic in both directions for several hours during the investigation.
