LONG GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- A section of Diamond Lake Road is closed in north suburban Long Grove after a pipe collapsed beneath the road last week.

A culvert, or a pipe that allows water to flow under the road, collapsed last Friday afternoon. The pavement buckled, making Diamond Lake Road impassable. It is closed between Gilmer Road and Route 83.

The Lake County Sheriff's office said the culvert was scheduled to be replaced in 2016, before the start of the school year. But heavy rain caused the pipe to deteriorate faster than expected.

A custom-ordered culvert has been ordered. But repairing the buckled pavement and replacing the pipe could take weeks.

The closure along Diamond Lake Road will remain in effect until the work is done. Signs for a detour via U.S. 45 are posted.

The sheriff's office said the Lake County Transportation Division is monitoring other culverts to prevent another collapse.
