CHICAGO (WLS) -- Dozens of families marched through the streets of Chicago Saturday to get communities involved in next week's Million Father March.

The parade marched on the city's South Side to highlight the strength of families and celebrate the new school year.

The Million Father March is held in more than 500 cities across the country and emphasizes the importance fathers play in their children's lives.

"One of the best ways to reduce violence in Chicago is to get fathers more involved in their children's lives, to get men more involved in their communities that they live in," said Phillip Jackson. "Those are the two major principles of the Million Father March."

The Million Father March will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. and will kick off at Pershing Magnet School.

Families from more than 100 schools are expected to participate.
