9 catalytic converters stolen in 4 days, Aurora police say

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- Police are investigating a series of nine catalytic converter thefts reported in a four-day period in suburban Aurora.

Police say that the nine thefts and one attempted theft occurred in the overnight hours between Sunday and Wednesday. Thefts were reported in the following areas:

  • Five vehicles parked in the 1600-block of North Marywood Avenue
  • Two vehicles parked in the 1200-block of Marywood Court
  • One vehicle parked in the 1700-block of North Marywood
  • One vehicle parked in the 1100-block of Tollview Avenue

In the attempted theft, police say that two men driving a gray Dodge Charger were interrupted while allegedly trying to steal a vehicle's catalytic converter around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000-block of North Farnsworth Avenue. The alleged suspects fled southbound on Tollview to westbound Sheffer Road, police said.

The suspects were described as African American males around 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds, police said.

The targeted vehicles included two Chevrolet Cavaliers; a Chevrolet Venture; a Chevrolet Malibu; two Pontiac Grand Ams; two Pontiac Sunfires; an Oldsmobile Silhouette; and a Honda Odyssey. All the vehicles were between 1999-2004 model years.
