EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (WLS) -- A boil order is in place for East Chicago, Ind., due to a loss of pressure in a filtration plant, officials said. Schools in East Chicago will be closed Friday because of the boil order.

Plant officials said the boil advisory is standard procedure according to state law whenever there is a drop in high service pressure.

East Chicago Superintendent of Schools Paige McNulty said schools will be closed because they would have to boil water for cooking and close all water fountains, which would be very difficult in order to serve 4,500 students.

The boil order states that all water used in preparation of food and beverage be boiled for 2 minutes before use or consumption.
