Boil water advisory for northwest Indiana

Water customers in parts of northwest Indiana are under a boil water advisory until 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to Indiana American Water.

The advisory impacts 10,000 customers in Portage, Porter, South Haven, Chesterton, Dune Acres, Damon Run Conservatory District and northeast Porter County. A portion of Burns Harbor was also added to the advisory Monday afternoon.

The water company recommends that users only drink and cook with tap water after boiling it for approximately three minutes. Tap water can be used for washing and bathing.

The issue arose just after midnight Monday when a water main broke near U.S. Route 12 and State Road 149. Crews are working to repair the 16-inch water main.

After the repair, the company said they will perform tests to make sure water meets regulatory drinking standards.

When samples from several sites within affected area show no presence of bacterial contamination, they will the CodeRed Emergency notification tool to notify customers.
