STREAMWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A cab driver was stabbed several times in a quiet residential area of northwest suburban Streamwood overnight.

The attack took place in a Streamwood subdivision as the driver dropped off his customer.

The driver has been a cab driver for 25 years, and sadly, he says he has been through this before.

Schawn Gainer says he was picking up a fair early Friday morning when the man got into his cab and tried to rob him. He says the suspect then stabbed him multiple times.

He is now home from the hospital and badly hurt.

"I got 10 staples right there, and four staples there, I'm in a lot of pain," he said.

Gainer, 46, says he felt weary when the suspect got into his cab, but is confident police will get the suspect.

Police say the stabbing happened at around 2:30 a.m. near Hillside and Oltendorf. Gainer, who was stabbed on the job before, says he is always on the lookout.

"On edge, but what I do, you gotta be ready, all the time," he said.

Longtime residents of the quiet neighborhood say they hope police catch the person responsible.

"We are a very diverse group but we don't have crime like this," said Donna Fetgatter, a resident.

The suspect did not get away with any money is still on the loose. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Streamwood police.
