CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- A west suburban teacher and summer theater director has been charged with sexual assault.

Charles Brieger is a teacher at Carpentersville Middle School.

For 26 years, Brieger has worked for school district 300.

A district spokesman says he is a special education teacher at Carpentersville Middle School, which is now on summer break.

Police arrested Brieger earlier this week on four felony charges. He's accused of sexually assaulting a teen in 2013.

A district spokesman said, in part: "District 300 has recently been made aware of the situation and we are working collaboratively with law enforcement."

In Elgin, Brieger was well regarded in the theater community. He worked part time at the city's Hemmens Cultural Center.

Brieger was hired in 1994. He worked as a stage technician and was the summer theater director, spearheading summer musicals for the community. After learning about the charges, the city of Elgin fired him Wednesday.
