CHICAGO (WLS) -- Friday was the state's 8th annual U.S. Constitution and Citizenship Day.

An event was held Friday outside Daley Plaza marking the 229th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The actual signing took place September 17, 1787.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse white and ABC 7's Cheryl Scott were among those in attendance.

"Today marks the day for us to commemorate the signing of the document that laid the foundation for our government and sent America on a course for greatness. The rights and opportunities our constitution provides makes my story similar to yours," White said.

A judge swore in 60 new citizens from several countries including Belize, China and Ghana.
