Future Mariano's store protested in Bronzeville

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Protesters at the future site of a Mariano's store say the land was supposed to be used for low-income housing in the Bronzeville neighborhood at 39th and King Drive.

The protesters are now calling for a plan that outlines where new housing will be built to replace the public housing that has been demolished. The protestors are critical of fourth ward alderman will burns.

"I agree, we need a grocery store in this part of town. But you shouldn't steal land away from people who have been promised a home. There are three other vacant corners at this intersection," said Frances Banks, a resident.

Ald. Burns says the store has the support of many in the community and will result in hundreds of jobs.
