CHICAGO (WLS) -- One person is in critical condition after being hit by a car while running from a car fire on the Stevenson Expressway, police said.

The car fire happened in the inbound lanes of I-55 near Martin Luther King Drive around 1 p.m. Thursday, police said. Police diverted inbound traffic off the expressway onto Martin Luther King Drive, as all inbound lanes were closed for most of Thursday afternoon while crews investigated. The closure caused traffic to back up for miles along I-55.

No other details have been released. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact Illinois State Police.
