CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Illinois Commerce Commission voted to launch an investigation into whether Peoples Gas misrepresented the cost of a project to get a merger approved.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan called for action after an independent audit revealed that an improvement plan would cost about $8 billion dollars instead of the previous projection of $2. 6 billion.

An I-Team investigation showed how the increase will get passed on to customers.

Peoples Gas says it is cooperating with all government agencies and is working on a new estimate.
